How to do the Durvasasana the pose of Sage Durvasa's with simple steps!

 Durvasana is a Sanskrit word formed by two words. Durvasa and asana.

Durvasa means an ancient sage and asana means posture or pose.

Durvasa is an ancient sage who is known for their losing his temper. Durvasa Rishi is the son of Atri(अत्रि) and Anusuya(अनसुया) and is said to be the incarnation of Shiva. He is described as an insane Saint. He is also known for giving a curse.

Durvasasana is also known as sage Durvasa’s pose. This pose is a part of Hatha yoga that can improve mind-body coordination and also offers great stretching of the back, hips, etc.

This is an advanced standing pose in that you have to stand on one leg and the other one behind your neck. Both hands should be on your chest in Anjali Mudra.

In the 18th century hathabhysapaddhati verse 81 describes that pose by the name of Trivikramasana with the word of ‘place a foot on the neck and stand up.'

Steps:


  • To do these poses firstly sit on the floor then bring your left foot to your chest.
  • At the moment, try to take your left foot up to your head and try to place it over your head.
  • Once you can make your foot over your head then bring the sole of your right leg to the ground and try to stand on it.
  • You have to balance to stand on one leg which can be done by practicing this asana regularly.
  • When you can stand in this posture after joining your hand in a prayer position.
  • Hold this position for 4-5 breaths after that came to a sitting position slowly.
  • Now that one cycle is completed then you should do these again with the right foot also.

While you are doing this durvasasana the first time you feel it is difficult because this is an advanced pose of yoga. But by practicing it regularly you can do it easily with time. so practice it on regular basis.

  • Those who are suffering from back and Neck injuries should avoid this posture.
  • Women also avoid these during pregnancy and the menstrual cycle.
  • If you have also done any kind of surgery then you must avoid this posture.
